Serious Coffee. Happy People.
Barefoot Coffee Roasters' entire existence is one thing: Striving for coffee perfection. We haven't reached it yet, but we are enjoying some amazing coffee on the way. Barefoot takes coffee pretty seriously and accepts no compromise in the pursuit of great tasting coffee.

Great Coffee is its own reward.
Great Coffee. Not very fancy or rico-suave but we like it. Barefoot keeps it simple; take great coffee, craft it with pride and passion, treat the whole coffee experience as a culinary art and operate sustainably from top to bottom. That's Barefoot.

Barefoot is a happy little cafe and roastery in the heart of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. Barefoot's pretty stuck in the old ways of craftsmanship with hands and hearts beating computer chips any day. The Barefoot experience is quality, flavor and passion. Sure, Barefoot has been showered with awards and accolades of late as the Barefoot difference is discovered and shared, but we are true to our roots of great coffee and happy people above all else. We are really serious about coffee and that makes us really happy people. Great coffee, coffee as a culinary art and sustainability.

Making sweet Barefoot coffee love will soon be a whole lot less cramped. As some of you may know the Barefoot coffee team has been working doggedly for the past year on our new Coffee Works roasting and training headquarters. We have battled through rivers of bureaucracy, permit issues, intense lease negotiations, setbacks, city ordinance problems, zoning compliance, air quality board permitting, licensing, negotiating, sacrificing, freaking, stressing and praying.

It has finally paid off. In May 2008 Barefoot Coffee Roasters FINALLY will be moving into our long awaited Coffee Works! All of our coffee roasting, training, offices and staff will be moving there. Of course the Barefoot cafe will still be running strong on Stevens Creek Blvd and all Baristas and cafe teams will stay there.

The Barefoot Coffee Works building is in the heart of downtown San Jose. It is at 76 Sunol st San Jose, CA 95123. View Larger Map Sunol street is just off The Alameda about two blocks from the HP Pavillion and across the street from the new San Jose Whole Foods store opening later this year. It is a beautiful 4,000 square foot two story building. All coffee roasting and production will be out of this gorgeous new facility. And Monica and team will at long last have a true training center with two dedicated espresso machines, multiple espresso grinders, coffee brewers and tons of space to train and practice. Monica will be holding monthly mini jams at the Coffee Works starting in June.

Right now the plan is to move the roasters in the first week of June and start roasting in the new space that week. Wow! And starting June 1st all mail and deliveries should now go to the 76 Sunol st address rather than the cafe.

In the new space instead of stacking two weeks worth of green coffee to the ceiling and having to crawl over it to get anywhere Eugenia and the roasting team will be able to have a few months worth of green coffee on hand. This should greatly reduce the times when we run out of a certain coffee for a few days while waiting for the next delivery because now we finally have space to store it all! You should also notice improved accuracy on your orders due to many new and improved systems going into the new Coffee Works. Eugenia and the production team have been working very hard on building new systems.

The new wholesale phone number of 408-293-7200 will be the main number at the Coffee Works and Our new Customer Builder Stephen Wade will be there to answer the phones and email and help you with coffee questions all day Monday through Friday 8 am to 6 pm.

The entire coffee team at Barefoot Coffee thanks you for your enthusiastic support of great coffee! We are honored to roast such great coffee and to be able to serve such amazing customers. 2008 is the year of the Foot! We love having you as a part of the Barefoot family!

San Jose Ocana

Scored a 91.5!

San Jose Ocana was ranked the #2 coffee in the Guatemala Cup Of Excellence auction. Barefoot Coffee was able to partner with a select buying group to win 2 bags of the mind blowing #2 ranked coffee “San Jose Ocana” from Roberto Sanchez Lazo in the Guatemala Cup of Excellence auction. This is an amazingly fragrant and crystal clean coffee. This coffee received a 91.5 score from the cupping jury. Mouthwatering complex layers of powerfully sweet and bright fruit acidity with pronounced cheery and ripe apricot and toasted almonds. Dessert in your cup.

San Jose Ocana was founded in 1623. Five generations of the Lazo family have worked the farm. Barefoot is very excited to be able to offer this amazing coffee to our customers. We expect this coffee to arrive with in the next 2-3 weeks so stay tuned!

In San José Ocaña, owners promote good relations with workers. In fact, in the middle of last century, they donated land (about 5 CABALLERIAS) for people working in the farm and they founded there what is actually Santa Fe Ocaña county. Quality controls are important in the farm. Visual controls, as well as humidity, fermentation and drying process are part of a daily basis routine. Coffee is wet milled and sun dried in patios. The farm also has de-pulpers, a resettler and a pulp extractor. As all Guatemalan farms, San José Ocaña has beautiful natural resources and natural forests. It also has cows, horses and vegetables.

San José Ocaña is also awarded with Illy Café for its quality. Roberto Sánchez Lazo

Bay Area Coffee Roaster selected as judge in

2008 Guatemala Cup of Excellence® competition

Barefoot Coffee Roasters’ Andy Newbom selected as only Bay Area judge of prestigious Cup of Excellence competition in Guatemala May 8th through 12th 2008.

San Jose, CA, April 24th, 2008 – The Cup of Excellence is the most stringent and prestigious coffee competition in the world. Judges are hand selected from coffee professionals around the world. Judging at a Cup Of Excellence competition involves three to four eight hour days of intense and non stop cupping of hundreds of remarkable coffees. To be invited to judge in the Cup of Excellence is a high honor and only a handful of judges are invited each year. Andy Newbom of Barefoot Coffee Roasters has been selected to be a judge for the 2008 Guatemala Cup Of Excellence May 8th through the 12th.

Mr. Newbom will be arriving early to Guatemala on the 6th in order to visit several farmers and mills in Antigua. Joining him in Guatemala City will be Edwin Martinez, owner of Finca Vista Hermosa coffee farm in Huehuetenango which Barefoot Coffee has bought direct from for the last four years. Edwin Martinez is hoping for a repeat of the last few years where their coffee placed in the top ten in the Cup Of Excellence.

Finca Vista Hermosa produces remarkable coffees and deserves to be in the top.” Expressed Andy Newbom, Barefoot Coffee. “In 2007 Barefoot bought the other half of the Cup of Excellence lot from Finca Vista Hermosa and we fell in love with the amazing flavors and hope to win the Cup Of Excellence lot this year!”

Susie Spindler, executive director of Cup of Excellence anticipates that 2008 will once again bring high average prices for the winning coffees sold at auction. Since its inception in 1999, the price per pound has steadily increased to reach $6.11 in 2007. In just the past four years the average price per pound has increased nearly 75% from $4.56 to $6.11.

Attention to quality on the part of the growers, coupled with increased competition from buyers around the world has helped Cup of Excellence winning farmers receive more money for their efforts,” added Spindler. In response to the marketplace momentum, the opening price for all auctions will be increased this year.

With its continued success, international jury participation has strengthened as well. To date, juries for most competitions are already full, with waiting lists for some countries.

Since it’s beginnings in 1999, the Cup of Excellence® program has hosted programs in Brazil, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Bolivia and Colombia. The Cup of Excellence program is managed by the non-profit Alliance for Coffee Excellence, Inc, The state of the art Cup of Excellence auction has been managed since 2002 in partnership with CommoditiesOne, a leading software development firm.
