Single family micro-lot farm,
Multiple Best of Panama Auction winner
This great coffee has really sweet and bright acidity for that snappy, lively kick in the morning. It has a striking fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade essence that sweeps across your tongue. A very well balanced medium body with just the right heaviness and tongue torque to keep you going. A nice sparky sumptuous coffee with personality. It has a surprisingly lush and rich body that balances well with the just right smooth brightness and full soft fruit notes.
This coffee is from a small single family farm in Panama called Café Kotowa. The name Kotowa comes from the native language and means “mountains”. Ricardo Koyner, his wife Benita and his two children, Juan Diego 6 yrs and 4yrs live in the farm that carries the Kotowa name. Grown in the breathtakingly high mountains of Boquette this strictly hard bean is a shining example of world class coffee and environmental and human stewardship. Café Kotowa produces and processes their coffee taking in consideration the environment and the social aspects of the people that work for them. Kotowa protects the virgin forests in surrounding areas of their plantation and use no insecticides or herbicides. They cut the weeds manually to prevent the use of herbicidal chemicals. All the by-products from the milling activity - pulp, waste water- is used to produce organic fertilizer which is used in the organic farm. For the people that work for Kotowa, they provide free medical attention and for the kids, they have a nursery with meals and a school program.
“Duncan Estate”, is in honor of his grandfather who came to Panama from Canada in 1918 to start the farm. This organic farm is just bearing it’s first production and it’s located in a plateau at 5500 ft, from which you can see the Pacific Ocean on one side and the rigged mountains of the continental divide on the other. This area is naturally blessed with a climate where the combination and correct amounts of rain, wind, sunshine, clouds and temperature allows us to produce an organic coffee that has a great tasting character.

Those lucky students and faculty over at Santa Clara University are enjoying the fruits of Barefoots labors. Great coffee is being served with attention to detail, care and joy. Santa Clara University joined the Barefoot family in January and has been experiencing a glorious coffee renaissance ever since. They are pulling the tasty Redwood Espresso and serving several great filter coffees as well. If you find yourself at or near the university stop in for a great espresso or coffee. Tell them you want it perfect and wonderful and expect great things.
Welcome SCU to the Barefoot family!!

So super bow down low and wave feather fans at the super coffee hipsters who took home the crowns at the WRBC 2007!!
Congratulations to the awesome
#1-Heather Perry of Coffee Klatch for taking the win AGAIN! She is so rock solid!
#2- Kyle Glanville of Intelligentsia for kicking super big and rocking
#3- Chris Baca of Ritual Roasters for being chewbaca and moving single origin and getting into third with no blend! Keep the SOS burning friend.
Team Barefoot had a rocking good time and did exceptionally well.
Yaelle Levine came in a very close 7th place and almost made the semi finals!!! She was a super espresso queen and was very impressive.
Dominic Taylor wowed the crowd and came in 9th place with kudos for integrating mushrooms and all local ingredients!
Mary Wholey shined and knocked it up at 10th place with only having a week of practice before competing.
Andy Newbom managed to NOT go over 17 minutes AND not spill everything and got 16th place despite getting only 30 minutes of sleep the night before with a very sick baby daughter.
The Temple crew did well as well so well:
Sean Komescher placed 12th
Lucky Rodrigues went over time by 2 seconds and was disqualified but would have placed 10th.
Tav Roderhof also went over time but would have gotten 11th
As we find out more on how the rest of the team from Caffe Med did it will be posted here.
thanks for coming out if you did! See you in Long Beach at nationals!!!

Team Barefoot is in the place of Barista Competition stuff. A crazy all around day of insanity. Andy managed to NOT go voer time, Dominic Taylor seriously rocked the spro. Sean from Temple and Tom from Caffe Med represented well.
Crowds are light but intense. It seemed that every other competititor was on Team Barefoot. When really it was only every third Barista…
But all priase and cheers of support go out to Miss Monica Rae Hill the wonder trainer, team mom, captain, cheerleader, maniac and friend of coffee. You are an inspiration Monica, Team Barefoot is what it is because of you. You rock.
come on up and cheer Yaelle, Mary, Lucky, Tav and Dan tomorrow!

Come out on Friday and see the slide stylings of our very own bluesman, Coyote Slim. He has assured me that rumors of his agressive tendancies are hugely overrated. Also some of the most authentic old Delta blues out there, especially considering he’s not from the Mississippi delta. check it: www.coyoteslim.com
Then, on Saturday, Katie Garibaldi and Lisa Montes bring Ladies Night to the cafe with their soft rockabilly singer-songwriteressness. give them a listen: www.katiegirabaldi.com
