Best Coffeehouse
Barefoot Coffee Roasters -winners four years in a row! 2003-2007!
Starbucks aside, the coffeehouse category is an especially competitive one in Silicon Valley. Barefoot wins not only for its inspired cups of joe and talented baristas but its sense of social responsibility as well. After oil, coffee is the most heavily traded commodity in the world and the java growing regions of the world, i.e., the Third World, would be in much better environmental and economic shape if more coffeehouses followed in Barefoot’s steps. Most of the cafe’s coffee is certified fair trade, organic and shade grown. All of which makes that double cappuccino give you an extra lift. Cool beans! 5237 Stevens Creek Blvd., Santa Clara. 248.4500.

Why They Won: Robots are not wanted at Barefoot. Those automated push-button espresso machines that certain other coffeehouses use seem to drain coffee of its complex, personal touch. At Barefoot, its all about the craftsmanship, the tasty sustainable beans, the fanatical baristas and the pretty foam patterns on top of your perfect latte. And the comfy couch, if you can snag it, is a great place to spend a Friday night listening to live music or surfing the internet on Wi-Fi.
House Specialty: Barefoot also has a wholesale business, providing many local restaurants and businesses with their morning caffeine.
Acceptance Speech: “We tip our cup to all the craftspersons whose hands touched the drink we all hold so dear. The amazing farmers who nurture the beans, the roaster who coaxes magic from them and the artisan baristas who pull the elixir with aplomb. We thank Starbucks for getting out of specialty coffee and into fast food. And a very special thanks to our fantastic customers, fans and artists who support great coffee and great people.” – Andy Newbom, Owner
Bet You Didnt Know: Barefoot roasts its coffee fresh on the premises in small batches to get the best flavor.
